Life as of Late
Hello Friends and Family,
Life has been hard lately.
I feel scattered. Worn. Weary. Clouded. Numb. Paralyzed. Thirsty.
Although I’m not sure thirsty is an apt description. Perhaps it’s more fair to say that I long to be thirsty, yet the paralysis I’m under seems to have desensitized me to my own lack of hydration.
Still, I am vaguely aware of the vacancy in my soul. I continue to search to no avail—eat and yet crave more garbage, scroll and yet say “Just a few more minutes.” I seek for some sort of fulfillment and satisfaction in all the wrong places.
Much has transpired in recent weeks, none of which seems to have settled.
Health scares and numerous doctor’s visits. Sinus infections and crumbled-up tissues. Extended family strife and uncertainty. Increasing work demands and decreasing sunlight. Planting dreams and financial worries.
Rowan and Kinsey feel the weight of it all—expressing their big emotions through their little bodies, likely more honestly than we ourselves do or know how to.
The long hours leave little time for each other and for others.
I struggle not to place unrealistic expectations on ourselves and to stop worrying about what others might think of us and the work we’re seeking to do here in New York.
I fear I haven’t done enough—planned enough, prayed enough, reached out to partners enough, fundraised enough, networked enough.
Even more so, I fear I haven’t been a better husband, dad, neighbor, son, or friend.
I fear that I am not enough.
Deep down, I know my family is my primary ministry—after all, who cares if we plant a seemingly thriving church community if our family, and we ourselves, are driven to ruin?
Physically idling. Mentally exhausted. Emotionally starving. Spiritually desperate.
A few weeks ago at our Incubator Collective class with City to City NYC, Kristian Hernandez—a church planter from Hope Astoria—taught on Kingdom Prayer. It felt especially fitting, particularly the section on spiritual warfare. Having received the book early, Erin and I had read this sectioning fall of 2024:
“The moment you enter the world of church planting, you automatically place yourself behind the enemy’s line.
Church planting is not cool nor glamorous. It isn’t what you see on Instagram or at conferences—it’s war. Do not neglect this reality. The moment you become a church planter is the moment the evil one paints a target on your back.
The enemy will attack you, your spouse, your marriage, your family, your finances, your physical and mental health, and more. Every ‘crack’ in your life will be tested in an attempt to destroy you or your witness.”
Upon reflection, nearly a year to the day since we booked our initial plane tickets to move from Seattle to NYC, the waves of life have not seemed to let up.
The prophet’s words speak to this moment:
“Ho, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and you that have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.”
Why?
Why do I continue to forsake the fountain of living water and dig out cisterns in my own strength, ones “that can hold no water” (Jeremiah 2.13)? The psalmist describes where I find myself:
“Some wandered in desert wastes,
finding no way to an inhabited town;
hungry and thirsty,
their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress;
he led them by a straight way,
until they reached an inhabited town.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wonderful works to humankind.
For he satisfies the thirsty,
and the hungry he fills with good things.”
I share all this because from the beginning of our church planting process, we’ve resolved to be honest and transparent with God, ourselves, and our partners. We believe we cannot do this work on our own and long for your prayers and encouragement.
In the midst of it all, we have still had many wonderful experiences and attestations of grace:
Our family has been a part of forming a Friday night park/dinner/dessert night with three other families. It’s become a regular part of our family’s life and rhythm.
I preached my first sermon at Trinity Grace Church (Listen on Apple, Spotify, or YouTube).
We shared an update with our host church Trinity Grace Church.
I met our good friend Brian Janous for lunch while he was in town.
I began regular church-planting coaching with the pastors of Trinity Grace Church.
I’ve been meeting with and learning from other seasoned planters in the city, especially those who have planted churches through alternative and creative ministry expressions (e.g., cafés, storefronts, community centers). This is a model that we are very interested in pursuing and are actively praying about and considering the possibility.
I attended a seminar led by Eugene Cho—pastor and President/CEO of Bread for the World—on faith and politics.
I’ve also been connecting with multiple church-planting networks and denominations that have experience planting nontraditional models in urban centers.
We’ve been going through The Marriage Course with our church community. We’ve really enjoyed and benefited greatly from these weekly conversations together.
We were thrilled to be able to meet and hear N. T. Wright teach about his new book on Ephesians.
I’ve been regularly attending a Brooklyn Pastors and Planters gathering for prayer, encouragement, and support.
My dad visited us for a few days. We also were able to see my dad’s cousin who was visiting his son at Columbia University.
I attended a one-day training event led by Alan Hirsch, where he discussed utilizing alternative ministry expressions as a means of church planting in the post-Christian West.
I’ve made an effort to attend local arts events to become more acquainted with the culture, including several book releases and a taping of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Erin and I took a day to retreat from the noise of the city while the girls were in school. We rode the train to Hastings-on-Hudson, enjoyed delicious coffee and pastries, walked along the river, and reflected together on what we’ve been hearing and learning from God about church planting. One of my planting coaches strongly encouraged us to make regular retreats from the city—to breathe, rest, pray, recreate, and reconnect.
I attended a one-day training on cultivating a prayerful church, hosted by Awaken Network—a ministry of Jon Tyson and Church of the City New York.
Erin’s parents visited us for five days.
Erin and I celebrated 12 years of marriage on November 9 in the West Village—sipping coffee, perusing a bookshop, enjoying Italian food, and laughing together at a stand-up comedy club.
Please continue to keep us in your prayers. We are deeply grateful for your prayers along with every text, call, email, DM, and letter.
With love and gratitude,
Tyler A. Saldaña

A New Season Begins
With the new season comes numerous exciting changes and opportunities for our family.
Hello Friends and Family,
Summer has flown by, and as September unfolds, we’re beginning to feel the shift toward fall—a season marked by change and fresh starts. This year, that feels especially true for our family: Rowan began Kindergarten, Kinsey started 3K, and I (Tyler) stepped into a new chapter as I began the Incubator Collective program with City to City NYC.
With both girls entering school for the first time, this transition feels significant—an end to one cherished chapter and the beginning of another.
While bittersweet certainly describes it, perhaps a fuller picture is captured in the mixture of emotions we’re feeling: sadness and excitement, grief and joy, loss and gain, endings and beginnings. I often find myself scrolling through old photos, missing the sweet sounds of toddler voices, their curls bouncing as they danced together, those warm little cuddles. And yet, I’m filled with deep joy and anticipation in this new season—celebrating their stories of new friendships, what they’re learning at school, and their triumphs on the monkey bars and jungle gyms.
Ministry, too, holds this same tension. Each step of faith in following the Spirit’s leading brings both excitement for what’s ahead and a sense of leaving something behind. As I serve as a Church Planting Resident with Trinity Grace Church and grow more rooted in our church and neighborhood, we’re also aware that our time on 5th Avenue is likely limited. We’re actively discerning a potential neighborhood for planting in the near future.
In this new rhythm—with the girls in school—we’ve had more space to listen, pray, and dream together. As we explore a few different neighborhoods, we’re asking God to show us where His kingdom is already at work, and how we might join in that work. Please pray with us for clarity from the Spirit, open doors to serve, and a neighborhood that aligns with our family’s passions and gifts.
I’m also deeply grateful for the new friendships forming in our Trinity Grace Church community, in our neighborhood, and among the seasoned ministry leaders in the city. My City to City NYC cohort includes over 10 pastors serving across 4 of the 5 boroughs. I feel humbled—and energized—to walk alongside such faithful leaders as we seek gospel renewal across this incredible city. On the eve of my first cohort gathering, my wife reminded me that for nearly half my life, I’ve dreamed of training with City to City NYC. Ever since I first sensed a call to pastoral ministry and church planting, their vision for gospel renewal in global cities captured my imagination. What a thrill it is to actually be here!
As we continue to settle into life and ministry here, we’ve been learning just how high the cost of living in New York can be. We’re so thankful for the $2,300/month in support we’re currently receiving—your generosity has made it possible for us to be here. That said, we’re realizing we need to raise an additional $1,000 to $1,500/month to fully meet our living expenses. We’re trusting God for continued provision, whether through new monthly or annual support, or through additional work opportunities that align with our mission. Please pray with us for God’s wisdom, provision, and open doors in this area.
Thank you for praying, supporting, and cheering us on as we step into this next chapter. We truly couldn’t do this without you.
With love and gratitude,
Erin + Tyler Saldaña

Summer in the City
Hello Friends and Family,
Not long after we settled into our apartment at the start of June, I (Tyler) reached out to the pastors at Trinity Grace Church for wisdom on how to spend our first summer in the city. Since Erin manages a café in Soho from Tuesday to Saturday, I needed to discern how best to spend these months—caring for Rowan and Kinsey while also getting to know the staff and community at Trinity Grace and becoming more acquainted with the city.
The pastors encouraged us to spend the season focusing on three goals:
to continue to connect with the community at TGC
to explore the city with prayerful curiosity, paying attention to where the Spirit might be drawing us
to learn how to hear God’s voice—not in spite of the city’s noise, but through it
With those goals in mind, most of our days have been spent outside our apartment, riding the trains to new neighborhoods and discovering the rhythms of life in different corners of New York. Parks and playgrounds, museums and zoos, bookshops and bakeries, cafés and quiet corners—each outing has been an invitation to pay attention, to listen, and to learn. I’ve also been able to connect with other pastors and planters throughout the city. Erin gets to join in on the fun on her days off, making those adventures all the more meaningful.
Summer is HOT. We were not prepared for the heat and humidity we’ve encountered! Though friends assure us it’s an unusually hot summer, we’ve been doing our best to navigate it with splash pads, hand-held fans (yes, everyone has one), and frequent stops in air-conditioned coffee shops.
In these last few weeks of summer, we look forward to celebrating Kinsey’s 3rd birthday, the girls attending their second Vacation Bible School of the summer at Church of the City (their first was at Plymouth Church—a historic stop on the Underground Railroad, visited by Abraham Lincoln and where Martin Luther King Jr. once preached), surprising the girls with a trip to Coney Island, prayerfully exploring more neighborhoods, preaching at TGC, and preparing for the school year to start. (I’m already diving into fall readings for City to City NYC’s Incubators Collective!)
Please pray with us as we continue seeking the Spirit’s leading regarding which neighborhood we’re being called to plant in. We’re also thankful for an encouraging partnership we’ve formed with a church on the West Coast, reminding us that this journey is supported by brothers and sisters far beyond New York. And pray for each of us to form meaningful friendships in our community.
Your prayers, support, and generosity have meant more than we can say. You've been with us as we step into the unknown, and your faithfulness has helped lay the groundwork for what’s ahead in planting a church in this city.
With love and gratitude,
Erin + Tyler Saldaña

We’re Here!
Hello Friends and Family,
After months of anticipation and preparation, we’ve finally arrived — we’re in New York City!
Three weeks ago, we landed at LaGuardia and hit the ground running. With just 30 days in our Airbnb, we knew we had a short window to get our feet under us. While Tyler began connecting with the staff at Trinity Grace Church and City to City NYC, we also jumped right into the job search. We’re thrilled to share that Erin received several managerial offers in Manhattan, and after much prayer and discernment, she accepted a position as General Manager at Maman in SoHo!
With her job secured and your generous support for Tyler’s church planting residency, we were finally able to start applying for apartments. We spent countless 10-hour days traveling all over Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan, seeing one tiny, oddly-shaped apartment after another in buildings that were cold and worn. After a while, we began to wonder — would we ever find a place that felt like home?
Then, on one particularly long day, Tyler squeezed in a final showing. He quickly FaceTimed Erin and said, “I think this is the one.” It was a two-bedroom apartment in the heart of Park Slope, a one-floor walk-up on 5th Avenue — just across the street from M.S. 51, the middle school where our church, Trinity Grace Church, meets on Sundays. It’s catty-corner to a beautiful park, and above a row of cozy cafes and shops. If we were going to spend the next few years living, investing, and training in this neighborhood, this spot felt just right.
We applied the next day — and waited.
On Tyler’s birthday, we got the best gift: we got the apartment!
On June 1st, we opened the doors to our new home, took a moment to thank God, and began unpacking. The very next morning, Erin started her training at Maman.
There’s still so much to do and to pray for — schools, insurance, furniture (hello, IKEA, Target, and Marketplace!) — but we are beyond grateful to now have a place to call home and a meaningful job to grow in. As we get settled and begin planting roots in our new neighborhood, we’re continuing to build a network of partners who want to invest in this mission with us.
Thank you for praying, supporting, and cheering us on as we begin this next chapter. We truly couldn’t do this without you.
With love and gratitude,
Erin + Tyler Saldaña

Moving Forward
Hello friends and family,
We’re excited to share that we have a moving date! Back in early February, we mentioned that our relocation had been delayed due to health issues that needed attention before making such a big move. Since then, we’ve received the necessary medical care and are now confident that we’re ready to take this next step. We’ll be packing up this month and leaving Seattle on April 30th. From there, we’ll head to Southern California for our oldest daughter’s college graduation. (Congrats, kiddo! We’re so, so proud of you!) We’ll also spend some time reconnecting with old friends and extended family in California, Arizona, and Colorado before flying to New York on May 13th.
Although the path to this moment hasn’t been a straight line, we trust that God has been teaching and equipping us every step of the way throughout this journey. We are incredibly grateful for your continued prayers, encouragement, and financial support during this season. Once we’re settled in the city, we’ll share more updates.
In the meantime, please be praying that God would continue to equip our family to seek the well-being of New York for His glory!

Trusting God’s Timing
Dear friends and family,
God is so good, and his timing cannot be matched. As we count down the days until we move our family across the country, we’ve cherished every conversation, every hug from a friend, and every walk around the neighborhood, all the while trusting that we are following God along the way. And yet, the Lord is still determining our steps.
Over the last few weeks, we have experienced some health issues in our family, and last week it all came to a head. We want to assure you all that we are okay and getting the care and support that we need at the moment, but we are going to take some time to seek healing and medical treatment. As a result, we have decided to postpone our moving date for a couple of months, which was originally scheduled for 2/28.
To be honest, this new development is not how we imagined these next few months unfolding. But God knew. He is our comfort and shield, leading us into deeper communion with him each day. We can already see the good in this pause, as God is giving us the time and space to continue preparing for what He has next. We are incredibly hopeful to spend this season letting God love us in ways we didn't know we needed, to become more dependent on him than we have yet learned to be.
We are so grateful for all of you and the support you have given us on our journey so far! We know you care about and love our family, so if you are wondering how you can be of help in this time, we are asking you to continue praying for us and our family. If you feel inclined, you can mail or message notes of encouragement or prayer. Your words are tremendous sources of encouragement and affirmation!
New York is still very much on our hearts and minds. The leaders of Trinity Grace Church have been graciously providing counsel, encouragement, and prayer in this time. It is still our intention and desire to join their church community as we seek training and development for urban church planting.
We will share more updates in the coming weeks and months. Until then, please continue to keep us in your prayers.
Thank you for joining with us as we seek to bring kingdom life and light to the world around us, wherever God has us.

5 Weeks to Go
5 weeks from today, we’'ll say “goodbye” to Seattle and depart for New York.
Three suitcases (one of which is a mini Frozen 2 suitcase), a duffle bag, a few backpacks, and the clothes on our backs will serve as our sole possessions for the time being. Shortly after we load our U-Box shipping container with nearly all of our possessions, the four of us will begin our trek to Brooklyn. The rest of our belongings will meet us there once we establish additional work and find an apartment. Taking a red eye flight on February 28, we’ll arrive in the city the morning of March 1.
Like the past few weeks, I expect the next five to be marked by a similar mix of thoughts and emotions—a Venn diagram of sorts, reflecting both the bittersweet goodbyes and the hopeful hellos that lie ahead.
As February 28 approaches and the “goodbyes” and “lasts” begin to peak around the corner, I’m beginning to miss this place we’ve yet to leave.
Our neighborhood in downtown Redmond has been a true haven—offering rest, reconnection, reflection, and renewal. It's given Erin and me our first extended break from vocational ministry in nearly 13 years, a season to breathe, to reflect, to dream, and to discern.
And it’s served as a home for our youngest two girls to blossom.
Kinsey’s no longer a 9 month old squishy baby; she’s a 2.5 year old energetically curious toddler. And Rowan’s no longer that 2.5 year old toddler; she’s a 4 year old inquisitive and thoughtful little kid now.
At face value, 21 months doesn’t seem like a very long time. But anyone who has had little kids understands how much change occurs in such a little amount of time.
The hugs and cuddles less prolonged. The R’s and L’s less difficult to pronounce.
Kinsey not only learned how to walk here, but she also mastered riding a scooter before turning 1! This is where she found her voice, telling us stories and expressing her feelings—especially when she thinks another kid isn’t being treated fairly.
And Rowan ascended, not only in height and up trees but also in intellect and creativity. From a shy toddler to an energetic, joyfully outgoing young girl, Ro creates wherever she goes. Whether it’s coloring pictures or crafting collages from leaves and twigs, her imagination spills over into the songs she sings while she skips and dances down our city sidewalks.
As we walk these downtown blocks in the coming weeks, we’re starting to sense that these walks and outings will soon become memories. Just like the summer nights at Downtown Park are now a chapter of the past, so, too, will this time be.
Our local Trader Joe’s will soon be that place where our girls learned how to push shopping carts and to say “please” and “thank you” and “excuse me, can we have some stickers please?”
Half Price Books and the Redmond Library will be where our girls discovered characters and concepts that expanded their imaginations.
Molly Moon’s will be where our girls explored their taste buds, discovering the various sweet sensations of the wonder that is ice cream.
The park will be the place where our girls learned how to make friends and squirt water squirters, to ride scooters and climb trees. Where our family enjoyed picnic dinners with neighbors, where we salsa danced as the sun disappeared into the night’s sky.
Rubinstein Bagels will be Mom’s former workplace, where we made and met countless good friends over bagels. It’s where we held school, read countless books, and sipped hot cocoa. It’s where we raced down the building staircase every morning, eager to shout, “Good morning, Mom!”
Redmond will be the place where our family learned how to enjoy and be present in our neighborhood and city, a way of living we believe will be vital to our family’s life and ministry in the city. In many ways, our presence in Redmond prepared us for our future in New York.
While these places have shaped our growth and joy, they aren’t what truly matter. Redmond will hold a special place in our hearts, not because of the places, but because of the people—old friends from the region and new friends from the neighborhood.
What a gift of grace it is to have a place and, more importantly, a people to miss dearly.
Financial Update
Here’s a brief update on our fundraising progress:
Anticipated amount needed through 2025: $70,000
Amount raised: $33,408.60 or 48% (as of 01/20/2025)
Anticipated additional amount via monthly giving and misc: $22,056.54
Total amount raised through 2025: $55,465.14 or 79%
Remaining need: $14,534.86 or 21%
Financial Partners at a Glance:
33 financial household partnerships
16 of which are monthly contributors
3 of which are annual contributors
15 of which are one-time contributors
4 one-time local church partnerships
We continue to be astounded by God’s provision and the encouragement of so many people in our lives.
In addition to our plane tickets being donated and our Airbnb being reserved and purchased, we’ve also booked our U-Box shipping container to move all of our belongings. With the costs of the Airbnb and U-Box, we are now realizing that we underestimated the up-front need of $10,000. Still, we feel comfortable with where we are at and are confident in God’s continued faithfulness to our family.
We sincerely thank each and every person, household, and church community who is financially partnering with us. Additionally, we are grateful for everyone who is maintaining us in their prayers. Our family has continued to feel supported and affirmed in this season by so many.
For those interested in partnering with us, more information is available here.
We also invite you to continue praying for us during this season. 35 days and counting!
Prayer Requests
Pray that we have hearts that listen, so we can hear God, each other, and those around us more clearly.
Pray for our youngest two daughters as they transition to New York. Specifically, pray that they cherish our time in Redmond, grieve the goodbyes, and process the distance from our friends and church community. Also, pray that they find meaningful friendships and connect well with Trinity Grace Kids. Finally, pray for discernment as we decide which school will be the best fit for Rowan this fall.
Pray for our family as we begin saying goodbye to our friends and the larger church community in the greater Seattle area.
Pray for the job search. As we begin seeking and applying for opportunities, pray that the right job will not only meet our family’s financial needs but also serve as a way to connect with our future neighborhood.
Pray for the apartment search. May we be patient and trust that the right place will open up—one where our family can grow together in Jesus and build community.
Pray that we would establish at least one local church as a partner in ministry, one that will commit to praying for, encouraging, and financially supporting us.
We Have a Moving Date!
(November 11, 2013) The first time we set our eyes on New York City was only a few steps outside of the W Hotel in Hoboken, NJ. As a wedding gift, Tyler’s aunt and uncle gifted us the first two nights of our honeymoon at the W. The view was absolutely incredible!
We are officially moving to New York City in February 2025!
Since we began sharing our church planting story about two months ago, God has provided far more—and at a much faster pace—than we could have anticipated. Having never raised funds before, we’re amazed by the progress and affirmation we've received so far. Here’s a brief update on our fundraising progress:
Upfront expenses: $10,000 goal [Phases 1 and 2] (100% covered as of 9/18)
Annual salary: $60,000 goal (50% covered as of 11/10)
24 household partnerships, 16 of which are monthly contributors and 2 of which are annual contributors
3 one-time local church partnerships
While our supplemental annual salary is not fully funded yet, we are deeply encouraged and feel confident moving forward, trusting that God will provide for our family’s needs.
Our extended-stay apartment in Brooklyn is booked, and we will be relocating on February 12th. We’re excited to share that we found a place just a few blocks away from both the school where Trinity Grace Church meets and from Prospect Park.
A heartfelt thank you to each of you who have felt led to support and partner with us in this journey to plant a church in NYC!
For those interested in partnering with us, more information is available here.
We also invite you to continue praying for us during this season. In just over 90 days, our family will board a plane with only a few suitcases and backpacks, relocating across the country to a city where we hope to dedicate our lives.
Prayer Requests:
That we would prioritize our family’s well-being and discipleship.
That we would finish well in Seattle, with Erin’s work, our neighbors, and friends.
That our family would maintain strong relationships with all of our partners.
That we would steward the contributions of other households and churches wisely.
That we would trust God to provide a job for Erin, an apartment for our family, and a school for Rowan and Kinsey.
That a few churches would adopt us as ministry partners, committing to pray for, encourage, and financially support us.
